# Preferences

Set durable personal guidance for how Topline responds and works.

## Where to find it

Open **Account > Assistant > Preferences**.

Address: `/account/assistant?panel=preferences`.

## Add a personal preference

1. In **Saved preferences**, choose **Add preference**.
2. Enter a short **Preference name**, such as “Explain calculations”.
3. Enter the **Guidance**, such as “Show the formula and units before giving a calculated result.”
4. Choose **Save preference** and read the resulting status.

Use preferences for durable personal behavior. Put company facts in [Company Knowledge](/docs/company-knowledge), definitions in [Glossary](/docs/glossary), and workspace rules in [workspace instructions](/docs/workspace-home).

## Edit or remove guidance

Choose **Edit** on the saved entry, revise the name or guidance, and choose **Save changes**. **Cancel** leaves the saved entry unchanged. To stop using an entry, choose **Remove** and confirm the named preference.

## Understand the status

- **Active:** the preference is included in current personal guidance.
- **Needs review:** a conflicting candidate is saved but inactive. Resolve the conflict through the available review process before relying on it.
- **Not applied:** the entry remains saved but is not currently included. The page can report that older active preferences were omitted from the loaded context; saved does not always mean applied.

## Recover a failed change

A duplicate name opens the existing entry for editing. A failed save keeps your changes in the form; correct the problem and retry. **Could not load preferences** has **Try again**. Recheck the saved status after removal or a conflict. Do not store passwords or temporary task state here.
